How to Set Goals That Actually Stick: Start With Reflection

You can’t navigate your path forward without first understanding where you are today.

Setting goals without reflection is like trying to use a GPS without entering your current location. You’ll never know the best route.

When the current year ends, It’s tempting to jump straight into the next year—plotting goals, new projects, ambitions—without pausing. But before you rush ahead, the most powerful step is reflection.

We often live either in the past or the future, forgetting to truly acknowledge the present. This means that we often jump straight into setting new goals and deciding on new projects, without taking the time to pause and reflect. We rush ahead, we put pen to paper and eagerly write down our goals. We check a box. it makes us feel good.

Understanding where you are today is the foundation for creating where you want to go tomorrow.

✨ What am I most proud of?

✨ What drained me this year. And why?

✨ Which skills did I gain or improve?

✨ Which new connections, personal or professional, enriched my life?

✨ What’s one thing I wish I had handled differently?

✨ When did I feel most alive or engaged?

No matter whether your year was full of growth, stability, or challenges, every experience carries a lesson.

Here’s my invitation: journal it out.

Take a quiet moment to reflect, write your thoughts down, and give yourself the gift of clarity. Journaling helps reduce mental clutter, process emotions, and uncover insights you might otherwise overlook.

✔️ Reflection leads to awareness.

✔️ Awareness leads to understanding.

✔️ And understanding is the first step toward setting meaningful goals.
